Are you aware that Suncoast Humane Society is not funded or governed by any national humane society or SPCA? I am often told by individuals that they have helped us by sending a large contribution to one of the national organizations. Usually it was the result of a touching advertisement being aired on our local TV stations. They felt they were actually giving to our "parent organization" and the donations would filter down our way.
While these ads are very sad and do tug at our heartstrings, they are often misleading. Although national organizations do help animals by being a resource for local shelters and other animal advocates, they do not operate animal shelters in our community.
When you choose to support Suncoast Humane Society, you are assured that your donation is used for our services, programs, and the animals entrusted to us.
For over 40 years Suncoast Humane Society has been helping both animals and people throughout Southwest Florida. Our services and programs touch the lives of over 37,000 animals and people annually, in our immediate area. This includes the operation of our Open Admissions Animal Care Center (shelter), where no animal is turned away regardless of breed, size, health or temperament. We offer an aggressive Pet Adoption Program, Low Cost Spay/Neuter services and an Affordable Preventive Health Care Clinic. Our Pet Pantry Program helps pets belonging to those in need of assistance. Our Thrift Stores in Englewood, North Port and Venice offer bargains galore of donated household items and other merchandise.
Rest assured that many of the animals we care for have the same sad faces and even sadder stories than the ones featured in the national ads. Just ask our dedicated staff and volunteers who are involved in our wonderful "Shelter Angel Program." This medical fund, operating on your donations, allows us to help injured and ill pets, requiring extra medical care before finding that permanent loving home.
So, the next time you see those pleading faces on a national ad, please remember that WE ARE YOUR HUMANE SOCIETY. The animals right here in Southwest Florida need your help. Only with your generous support can we continue to offer the important services and programs needed to help OUR animals.
