Recognizing the cruelty connection

The Uniform Crime Reporting Program of the FBI has established a national database for animal abuse cases. Cruelty cases formerly were recorded as "other crime" in the agency's national Incident Reporting System. They now are being categorized as serious class A offenses.

Clarissa's great escape leads to new home

It was the start of Clarissa's second day at one of Suncoast Humane Society's five satellite adoption locations, a large pet supply center in North Port. Although the gray tabby, 1-year-old female cat had been accustomed to the surroundings in the adoption cattery at the humane society, this new off-site stuff was a little confusing and unfamiliar.

The no-neuter fallacy

"Ouch!" he cried, when asked if he wanted to have his dog neutered. His wife, on the other hand, smiled and said, "Go for it." Why is it, with all the publicity on the benefits of both, that having our female pets spayed is more accepted than having the males neutered?

If pets made New Year's resolutions

It is time to make our New Year's resolutions, so I asked several people what resolutions they thought their pets would make, if they could tell us. The responses were varied. Quite a few thought their dogs would want to be walked more frequently, their cats played with more often, and both wanting to enjoy more quality time with their human companions.

Give a gift donation this season

I was asked recently, "What in the world do you give your adult children for Christmas when they have everything under the sun?" Before I could answer her, this wonderful, compassionate lady added, "Here, this check is a donation to (the) Suncoast Humane Society in honor of both of my children. They will be delighted to know it is their Christmas gift."
