October is gone, which means that National Adopt A Dog Month is officially over for this year. However that does not mean that you will be unable to adopt a dog, or a cat for that matter, in November. In fact, we hope you do.

Adopt a dog month should have no ending

There is approximately one week remaining in October, which in the animal welfare world is known as Adopt A Dog Month. The intent of the celebrated month is to create awareness of the benefits of adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group. It also affords the opportunity to promote that powerful human-animal bond.

Where we get our pets

Most modern-day statistics agree that only 29 percent of pet owners adopt their pets from animal shelters or rescue groups. More than 50 percent obtain their pets from family members, relatives or friends, or they find them abandoned as strays.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, pet ownership has more than tripled since the 1970s, when approximately 67 million households had pets. Today approximately 165 million homes have at least one pet.

Pet-adoption personnel at humane societies often hear the comment, "Wow, this is harder than adopting a human baby." It is normally stated in jest, and I seriously doubt that it is true, but it is an adoption, not a sale of a pet, and is treated very seriously.
